i have a 96 ford escort it has fire but will not start can u tell me why

What size motor and is it dohc(dual overhead cam)?
Try turning on the key(engine off) and listening for the fuel pump. It should hum for about 3-5 seconds and then cut off. You would hear it best toward the rear of the car.
