Can you please tell me why my Escort could be running rich especially when idling. On cold frosty mornings you can see alot of white smoke coming from the exhaust, I get the feeling the engine management system thinks the engine is still cold even though the engine is at its normal working temperature but thats just a guess

Rich exhaust usully black in collor
white smoke is an indication of water or coolant in the exhaust
is the engine overheating or running hot?
Did you have to add coolant?

I don't have to add any coolant, it stays on maximum all the time. In summer it gets very warm, the cooling fan comes on alot even if its not that hot outside. In winter the temperature gauge reads half way in to the normal sector.
