Is is true that the oxygen sensor stops working on escorts after 100,000 miles and is it even worth it to replace it?

You only replace it when the " check engine" light is ON and the code is oxygen sensor related. Ford recommends changing it every 100,000 miles but why replace it if it is working fine.
