1994 Ford Escort Security system locked

I recently purchased a 1994 Ford Escort as a family run-around but last week it did not want to start when I turned the ignition key. A friend went to push-start the car but as a result the security system immediately locked and I am now unable to start the car at all. Have no idea what to do to sort this problem myself. Any simple solution please?

Check battery and battery terminal
remove and clean terminals
try and get a jump start
suspect a bad starter
or a solenoid

Thanks for your reply. Hands up, I'm a woman - divorced and never had to do this for myself before. I don't think it is the battery that is a problem as the lights work ok (but that is about all that works)! I will try to check out what you suggested, but what on earth is a solenoid?

Suggest have a helper and a test light

IF THE BATTERY IS GOOD
SUSPECT A BAD STARTER
if lights radio wipers all work and no starter check
starter
