1994 Ford Escort No Compression

Car died ("stalled") on highway, no strange noises, just "check engine" light. Now it will not start, but has spark & fuel. Mechanic says no compression, needs new engine. Is there anything else that could be wrong that is not as drastic as new engine?

Timing belt checked, was practically new.
