1994 Ford Escort 94 Escort LX Sport stutters on Acceleratio

Hi guys. '94 Escort LX Sport has been experiencing some stuttering or chugging when accelerating, especially in the lower end of the gears, and while accelerating to achieve highway speeds (basically when under load of any kind). Check Engine light has also been coming on sporadically since the problem began.

I'm guessing it may be the spark plugs or wires (and if it is, how do I change them?), But I thought I'd ask your advice before I pop the hood. Possibly a fuel pump problem?

Any help would be appreciated.

I would look at ignition wires and tune up 1st
if its fuel pump ,id imagine you ll have problem at a steady speed on the high way
get the codes and the reason for check engine light ON
