Rattle noise under the hood

I have a 2001 Ford Escape 2WD 3.0L truck with 105k miles on it. I am hearing a rattling noise coming from the engine when I accelerate at about 50-60 MPH only. The truck has no get up and go. I hear the engine racing but no power. It also seems that it is using alot of gas also. I replaced the EGR valve and sensor. Am I looking at an engine or transmission replacement? I am tired of getting it put on the diagnostic every time I explain it to a mechanic to see what is causing this noise. Please help!

Rattling and low power/ get under it and gently rap on the cat converter, sounds like it may be falling apart inside

Depends on which one. What you have is a Mazda chassis with a Ford engine. Ford usues several cats on most of their vehicles to calm the emissions, the engines are pretty "dirty" on their own. See if there are more than one and get back to me. Price wise, I recommend factory parts, so it will be a few bucks depending.
