2005 Ford Escape Gear Shift won't shift

2005 Ford Escape All Wheel Drive Automatic 5400 miles

I have a 2005 Ford Escape. Lately, it has been hard to get the gear shift to move out of park. What is causing this and can I fix it without going to the dealership and get ripped off?

Having the same problem. Have you found a solution, yet? I'm thinking it's got something to do with the safety lockout, but haven't found what the linkage from the brake is; if it is electrical or pnumatic. Hoping I will get an answer, cuz I bid $5.
