Transmission problem
1991 Ford E-Series Van 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 100K+ miles

Van has a C6 transmission.

After warm-up, a rattle that sounds like dice shaking starts. This rattle is affected by bumpy roads as well. Pulled the engine cover and had a friend listen as I drove. He said that he could hear thr rattle clearly at the bell housing, but not at the valve cover or side of engine. This does not happen at an idle or when driving slowly. I have noticed that when I shift into reverse, I hear a single click that sounds like the same sound only not a rattle. When the rattle happens, I can shift to nuetral with no change to the rattle. Even in nuetral, road bumps will affect the rattle sound. Any help please?

Sounds like a possible cracked flywheel.
Pull the inspection cover and rotate the flywheel around and look for one.

A set of chassis ears may help narrow this down. Noises can resonate and sound like they are in one spot but not always true.

Rap on the cat and listen for any rattling. Look around the bell housing for an exhaust problem from being to close or clamp rotted off etc.
