I need help

I have a 1996 Ford Contour. It has 87,000 miles on the car. I was driving yesterday and I notice when I put on my defrost on to clear up my windows my battery light started flashing and the temperature meter move quickly from normal to hot. I turned the defrost off and the battery light stopped flashing and the meter moved back to normal. What could cause this problem to occur?

I would suspect the alternator is going bad. When you cut on the defrost thats putting a load on the charging system. If the voltage is down the light will come on. Go to advance auto and they'll check the charging system for free. This will determine if you need to replace the alternator. Good luck
