Our car no longer works correctly at high speeds. If we try to push it much past 50 it takes a long time to finally shift up, and then it spews white smoke out of the tail pipe. It also spits smoke when we go back down below fifty. We assume that it is a transmission issue (that is the gear shift occurring at 50/55 is bad). My question is the worth of fixing it. Is a 99 Contour with 160,000 worth the cost of a new transmission, or should I just start looking to sink that money into something else? I also would be open to other suggestions if I have misdiagnosed the problem.
