1998 Ford Contour no speedometer/odometer and trans. Shifts

My daughters 98 contour is revving and shifting into 2nd hard. This began yesterday at the same time the speedo went crazy and the cruise control quit working the spedo went to 0 and the odometer including trip milage quit working. The O/D light blinked for about an hour and went out. Everyone says its a pricey transmissin problem but I don't buy this since it was changed 20,000 miles ago. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As a 1st step you need to get the codes read
auto zone or similar auto part store will scan it for free
I would say its a speed sensor or tranny solenoid
check fuses

Eric, were you able to figure out the problem and a solution? My 98 Contour just started having the exact same problem
