I have a ford contour that needs a transmission I heard that I need to find an exact replacement transmission for this car my question is what am I looking for to find an exact replacment I heard its the tag numbers on the bell housing what numbers am I looking at and what should I look for in a replacment unit

Yes it is a cd4e I knew that I went looking for a junk yard replacement and one person told me that if I dont get the right tanny it wont work I heard that the electronics are differant so I need to know what should I look for when I find a used tranny I thought you can identify the proper tranny but the identfication plate on the bell housing?
