Carbon canister

I have a 1976 bronco with a 1989 5.0 HO motor. Gas is flowing out of my carbon canister. It is my understanding that fuel should not be flowing thru the canister.

I have not been successful in finding info about what would cause this. Mechanics that I have talked with tell me that it is rare for carbon canisters to go bad.

I have two questions:

1. Has anyone experienced this and knows fix?
2. Since fuel has been passing thru canister, is canister now ruined?

thanks for any help

Is this something new recently? Follow the lines to see where they're going. I'm not sure if flooding the canister would ruin the ability to absorb the odors. I've never replaced one myself.

Thanks for the interest. This is recent. Gas flows out of the canister. However, since I posted I've determined that the canister is not bad.

The vapor line from my rear tank is the culprit. Fuel is flowing thru it to canister. Reading the service manual for Ford 5.0 HO engine indicates that line should only pass vapors. Its suppose to have a purge control valve in the tank that prevents fuel from leaking into canister.

I don't know if I have a purge control valve. This engine is in a 1976 Bronco. I did not put in the gas tank. Tomorrow I will spend time looking at tank to determine if I have one.

What I find puzzling is that in 9 years of driving this rig, I've never had a problem. Anyway thanks for taking the time to respond.

I will post an update on what I find. Anyone have any suggestions please let me know.
