My bronco is a 5.0 I have automatic locking hubs when I get stuck in 2 wheel drive and put it into four I give it a few seconds hit the gas and only rear wheels spin I let off and try again and I hear clicking and clunking then I let of again and will finally kick in can it be the automatic locking hubs? And today I was stuck on ice and only the 2 left tires were spinning is that ok?

Here's the deal with automatic locking hubs: When you go from 2 wheel to 4 wheel drive, the drive shaft going from the transfercase to the front end has to turn the front axle in order for the spring loaded locking mechanism in the front hubs to lock in. They lock in best when the axles turn forward. If you are already stuck when you go into 4 wheel drive, do NOT give it alot of gas. Ease into it in order for that front axle to turn just a little bit. The clunking and jerking you hear and feel is that locking mechanism trying to lock into the turning axle assembly.
