I was going down the hi-way and it was like flipping a switch, the truck shut down. It picked back up again and I went on to the store. When I came out and tried to start it it took a lot of cranking to no avail. Then I held the key over for about 20 seconds and when I let go it started. I didn't have anymore trouble with it until the next day when I went to pick my son up from school. It didn't start at all. I got to a parts store and bought a new ignition coil, put it on and it ran fine for about a mile and it flipped a switch again and then backfired and I had it towed home. What could it be?

Never mind. I figured it out myself. I'm not donating to anything that doesn't want to help first. Look at the red cross.

I have a 84 same thing happend to me 2 things it could be, first gues would be ignition control moduel on the fender, 2nd fuel pump both have hoppend to me. Parts are not bad in price. Check fuel punmp firs, disconect the coil wire take the fuel line off the carb, get a catch can put the hose in have some one crank engine over for a few seconds see if you have a strong steam of fuel, be carful as the fumes can start a fire, keep the coil wire away far as possible.I would say get a ignition moduel fist. Hope this helps
