Is the 1996 ford aerostar 3.0 transmission the only transmission the only one to fit or is there another one that will work.

We recommend that you stay with a direct fit transmission. Other ones may bolt in, but then you have problems with sensors, drive shaft length. It will lead to a lot more money and problems.
