Transmission problem
1988 Ford Aerostar 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I'm having a problem with my reverse, when gear is changed to "R" it gets reverse and then it gives out, then I go into Neutral go back to "R" it gets it again for about a sec. Then it goes out again. It's been like this for about a few months. The van itself shakes when turn into reverse, then you can hear a weird sound in between the transmission oil pump and the turbine. Any help. Cant figure out what the problem is.

If it will only hold the gear for a few seconds and you can hear a turbine sound, the trans most likely has an internal failure and will need to be taken apart to find out what is wrong. Whenever a pump whines with an automatic trans it is bad news. You could try a service, but it may not help
