I've been working on this vehicle for a few weeks now and can't figure it out. It will run for a while then it will flood while just sitting there idling, I've gone through the vacuum lines and capped off anything unnecessary. I've replaced the cap and rotor but still nothing. It runs and idles great but after about 10 to 20 minutes it floods.

Update: Just got it started again and it's now running like an old tractor. You can't let off the gas or it'll just stall.

Jace,

What kinda fuel pump are you using?

Carburetor brand and type?

I'm guessing this is a 258 and not a V-6 as in

your info above.

Something that might help a lot would be some

pics all over with the breather removed.

Maybe not so close up, but different views as to

maybe see it all.

Especially to include the carburetor.

Lot's of things could be modified over the past

38 years, sometimes I can spot an issue faster

than "digging for one in text"

Maybe we can get it all figured out!

Hey Medic yes, it is the strait 6 and not the v6 sorry about that.

I'm not currently home but I will take a few pictures when I get home.

It has a mechanical fuel pump.

I don't know much about the carb other than its a cheap one from Amazon.

It's not always a fast fix---but we try the best we can!

Some Jeep threads I've answered on here are over 100 posts long!

Maybe some more closer (not too close) pics around the

carburetor, intake manifold

(vacuum lines)

and maybe some around the distributor.

Do you have tools/ meters/ etc that you can use to correctly tune

your Jeep? Timing light/ dwell-tach/ vacuum gauge?

Do you know how to use them?

I have a couple of pics for you.

Hi,

I read through your post. CJ is the best one we have with the Jeeps. I have a question, Have you checked the float? The needle and seat in the carb may be sticking open allowing the float bowl to overfill and flooding the engine.

It's a thought. Also, is this something that just started? I've taken apart carbs and found dirt in the needle and seat that blocked it open, preventing the float from stopping the fuel from entering.

It's a thought. CJ, what are your thoughts on that idea?

Let me know.

Take care,

Joe

Hi Joe, thanks for the idea.

I've thought about doing that, but I'm still trying to figure out carburetors on cars.

I'll just have to do it and learn the hard way.

All rightey!

I have to explain this like this unless you have magical powers!

I don't know if it's actually flooding or not (yes, it is possible

your needle and seat may be allowing too much fuel in, either

set wrong, or defective parts (bad needle and seat/ float with a

hole in it).

I usually save that stuff for last.

It may have a choke setting problem.

Nevertheless, Things must be set the best they can be to

make it want to run. Like correct adjustments and such.

It's not gonna want to run with it initially being cold.

You will not be able to adjust it wonderfully until it can

stumble it's way on up to operating temperature.

Then it can be adjusted!

Hopefully, no one has abused things like over tightening the

mix screws.

Neglected maintenance parts like spark plugs/ plug wires/

distributor cap/ etc. should be installed. Slinging in

unnecessary stuff in should be avoided.

A real biggie---don't start slinging in a bunch of fad crap

that your buddies recommend!

This exponentially compounds problems!

To do this correctly, you will need some meters/ gauges---it

is impossible to close enough by "ear". (this ain't a push

mower)

I answered a post in 2010 to aid a Jeep guy with his 304.

I used my 258 to talk him through getting his 304 to run.

There may be other things that might need to be addressed

in the thread,

If you'll concentrate on the 258 pics and text, this might

get it running better, then we might tweak things from there.

I had not been a member long back then, my grammar lacks at

times,

I use country boy lingo, and I had a different user name (it was

suggested that I change it) Years later, it's "locked" and

I cannot edit it.

"Vapor Lock" is a real thing, but if your fuel system is still using a

return line to the tank (3 port fuel filter)--it is doubtful you have

that issue at all!

Usually ignorant folks sling that term out there to make

themselves seem knowledgeable!

The tuning stuff you need can come from Amazon/

Yard Sales/ my favorite---Pawn shops (cheap) folks don't

even know what they are!

Let's see if my link helps! Report back with good news!
