Was pulling on to the highway and my vehicle started sputtering slowed down and my check engine light started flashing. I live in the country so I was closer to home then a mechanic drove home and parked it. Now with that said I have had my check engine light on previously due to gas cap at least that is the code it threw up, but without being near a place to have it checked again wondering what to do.

The light is flashing to get the message to you to stop driving. It means that the engine has a misfire severe enough to damage the catalytic converter if you continue driving. You need to have the codes read and that should at least tell you which cylinders are missing and then you will have to determine the cause.
