I got a check engine light 525 miles ago which a local mechanic diagnosed as a faulty purge valve. Apparently, he thought this was the cause of an EVAP system code.
After the work was done, the check engine light was gone, but it's now come back, 525 miles later. As a result, I can't pass the functional part of the California smog test. The smog guy's obd2 scanner identifies the problem as incorrect purge flow.
I think there might be many causes of this scan and wonder how to go about chasing down the source of the problem. I have replaced the gas cap.

Hello,

I am assuming you have the P0441 trouble code which is for the incorrect EVAP purge flow.
This issue could be due to a number of components. It could be a wiring issue as well.

This code can get triggered for a faulty purge solenoid circuit, defective vapor pressure sensor, cracked vacuum hose, faulty vapor pressure circuit etc.

Best course of action would be to take a look at the trouble shooting steps to figure out what might be the issue.

I have attached the trouble shooting steps for P0441 below.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you.

Thank you for the trouble shooting steps. Many of them say 4wd, (my t100 is a 2wd), but is it that the steps are the same for each?

Those steps are the same for 4WD and 2WD. So that won't be an issue.
