Hi, I have a Volkswagen Golf Mk7 1.8 TSI with the 09G automatic transmission, not DSG.

Recently while driving, the transmission randomly shifted into 3rd gear at around 20 km/h and it wouldn’t let me downshift. After that, when selecting Drive or Reverse, the car would kick/engage harshly. I scanned it and got code P2723, which seems to point to pressure control solenoid E / solenoid performance.

Would you recommend starting with a 09G transmission fluid and filter change, or should we test/replace the electrical pin/internal harness/solenoid E first? I don’t want to replace the whole valve body unless it’s actually confirmed bad.

Also, if we do the fluid service, I know it needs the correct VW G 055 540 A2 fluid and the level has to be set by transmission fluid temperature, not coolant temperature.

Can you let me know what you would diagnose first and what you recommend?

Hello, You are correct that code P2723 points toward a pressure control solenoid “E” performance problem. I would check the fluid level and condition first, if it is low and some and clear the codes, if it is okay we should test the electrical connector/internal harness/solenoid testing first, then service the fluid and filter if the fluid condition. Here is a guide to help and the wiring diagrams so you can test from the pressure solenoids from the TCM behind the left front wheel well. Also check the connector for corrosion as well.

The pressure-control/linear solenoids should generally test around:

4 to 8 ohms at room temperature, the fluid type is only VW G 055 540 A2

Check out the images (below). Let me know what you find, clear the codes when completed and try again.
