We had obdll codes for a misfire in # 4. We had a neighbor mechanic check it out and found a hole in valve # 4. He took the valves to a machine shop (he said) to repair. He put it back together and the codes cleared. At that time it sounded like new. He then took the car for a test run, but was gone for four hours. He changed the oil with the wrong oil, 10/40 instead of 5/30 and he degreased and power washed the engine. Now the car runs terribly with erratic hesitations and surges like I have never experienced in my forty five years of driving every kind of jalopy out there. Our code reader now comes up with codes P0108 and P1607. The mechanic checked the wiring to the MAP sensor and they checked out okak. He said something about the knock sensor and that he may have shorted something when he washed it and now he is not coming over and seems to have abandoned the project. We paid him half but he still is avoiding us. So it is a big mystery now and we are hoping to do a diy repair (my son knows a bit and wants to learn) because we cannot afford anything else right now. What might be the problem?

The MAP sensor high reading is usually the result of a bad sensor that can't identify the engine load. However, the 1607 is an internal problem in the engine control module (ECM). Usually there is a bad solder joint. However, the ECM could be causing the MAP to not work. It requires a real time scanner at minimum to determine if and how the MAP is responding.
