Sounds a lot like me. Your description sounds like it needs a throttle body cleaning. Dirt/carbon build up in the throttle body bore and block the air that allows the engine to idle. It also makes the engine run rough when cold because the computer thinks it has a certain amount of air at a certain throttle position. With the build up it no longer does. So the cold start settings for the throttle no longer apply.

Cleaning it involves removing the throttle body and using cleaner and brushes and rags to clean the deposits.

This is a different vehicle but it shows the build up and the cleaning process.

Thanks for that information Steve. That makes a lot of sense to me, and I will do that as soon as I get some carburetor cleaner and I will let you know the results. This is the first fuel injection car that I have owned and it is a new learning experience. Have a great new year! Ross

Make sure you get throttle body cleaner. Some of the generic carburetor cleaners can damage the coatings that are used inside the bores on some makes.

Hi Steve, I have just been into town a bought a sensor safe carburetor cleaner and took the throttle body of and cleaned it, It was dirty. So all I have to do is to wait until tomorrow morning to see how it starts up. I will let you know what the verdict is. Thanks, Ross

Hi Steve, started the car this morning and It ran a little bit rough for a few seconds and settled down to an idle without me giving it any throttle. So far it seems a big improvement on what it was doing before, but I will see what happens over the next few days. Thanks, Ross

Hi Steve, How are you, Hope you are enjoying your new year, I let the car sit for 3 days and when I started it, It coughed and spluttered for a few seconds and settled down to an idle. When it is started ever day it is fine. Also can I tell you another thing it does, When I am out on the road and I want it to speed up it accelerates and pulls really good with out giving it to much right foot, but sometimes when I need it to get going it seems to be flat until I really put my foot down. I have Replaced The plugs, Fuel filter, Air filter, Would putting it on a Diagnostic Machine pick up on these issues, Thanks Ross

It wouldn't hurt to see if it has some codes hidden. It may also show that you have a failing sensor like the MAF or low fuel pressure from an intermittent issue. That's the hard thing when it isn't a constant problem.

Hi Steve, I had my car Diagnosed and the fault was the Camshaft sensor that was the fault that showed up, But what was strange it was not showing up on the OBD, So Kerry Reset it for me and he told me to take it out and clean it as well, $40.00 Dollars well spent, If It keeps on giving me trouble I can get a new one from Germany and the USA for about $28.00 Nz, So that's a cheap fix, Thanks Steve for your help, Ross

Hi Steve, After putting the new Cam sensor in and getting it checked to see if there are any other faults and cleaning the ICV and throttle body and all the other things that I have done The car still starts up and runs rough until I give it a bit of throttle and then it settles down and then is fine the rest of the day, It seems to me to be over choking it self and running to rich, Have you any answers to this, Thanks Ross

Check the fuel pressure regulator for leakage, There are two versions depending on when it was actually built. One will be on the fuel rail on the engine. The other is mounted under the veh. On the frame. The pictures show them. They operate the same way and can fail the same.
Both have a vacuum hose attached to them. Remove the hose before you try to start it cold. If you see ANY gas in the hose or evidence of gas the regulator is bad. A small leak could cause both of your problems as it would let a small amount of fuel bypass the system and then clear up as you opened the throttle.

Check all of the vacuum lines as well. A small crack or damage could cause an air leak that would improve as the engine warms up.

I would also run an injector leak-down test as a small leak in on of those could also cause a rough idle but get better with a bit of throttle.

Hi Steve, Well I finally solved the start up issue, After checking the fuel regulator and found no issues there I took the air filter box off and the throttle body, and started to check all the hose connections and what I found was there was a hose about 3/8 in dia that in one end was a hollow plastic insert and was not connected to any thing, It was up under the inlet manifold and not easy to see, after a bit of looking around I found the other end and put the 2 together, and this morning I went out and started the car and it Purred like a kitten first Go. I have owned the car for a year now and it has been doing this for that long. What I don't understand is why only was it doing the rough start up only when starting up from a cold start and the for the rest of the day it started up just fine, It does not make sense to me, Ross

Good to hear you found the problem.

The hose would cause a large vacuum leak. The reason it causes more issues when cold is that the extra air causes a lean mixture that doesn't like to ignite, that same mix will light better when the engine warms up. Same issue was common on carbureted cars if the choke didn't work properly, the lean mix wouldn't ignite.
