So I got this truck as a work truck really clean nice truck, but been chasing a misfire to the point now it idles perfect a little rough but not bad at all. The second I go to drive it, it hardly wants to move. A mechanic told me it was bank1. Then it had an injector code before misfire code. I have done plugs, wires, checked coils and cleaned drivers side injectors which were pretty yucky, but no luck. Fuel pressure is great so I’m at a loss. Trying to save some money here and I’m getting nervous it could be internal after $2,500.00 in other repairs is there anything else I can try before bringing to mechanic?

Hi,

Could you provide the codes that were found? Also, has anyone checked to see if the catalytic converter is plugged? Take a look through these links:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/engine-misfires-or-runs-rough

and

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-test-a-catalytic-converter

Let me know if you notice any smoke from the exhaust, odd smells, the codes that were found, and if you notice loss of coolant.

Take care,
Joe

I have not noticed any loss of coolant, their has not been any smoke. We have not checked the catalytic converter and as for the codes; I think I have the first ones it threw but since I fixed a massive exhaust leak from the back driver side bolt being broke with that amazing clamp the codes changed. So the only one that’s thrown right now is p0300 (misfire detected) that was from O’Reilly. Then I went to the shop and the Zeus threw that after throwing a faulty injector code. Which I don’t recall what it was and the truck is now stationary! I was doing a bunch of reading on this site and someone that had the same bank misfire had a shorted out injector and and busted fuse from it. So I’m about to drive to the truck and check that fuse because while cleaning injectors the far back drivers side injector (7) I believe had a little slice in the insulation of the wire and it was exposed. When I had it off cleaning it it was clicking which now I understand that does not indicate that it’s working? If the fuse is fine does that mean the odds of the injector being shorted are slim? How can I check if it was shorted out?

So the catalytic converter does make a little sense because for example trying to climb a hill the more of a load the more it bogs and won’t do anything, but say I drop it to low 1 and barley touch the gas it will slowly start to move but even still! I’m going to upload a video of me trying to climb a hill excuse the language if you would needless to say I’m pretty pissed about the situation. I bought the truck 2 weeks ago and have already put over $2,500.00 in repairs. A/C compressor, power steering pump, brake calibers, plugs wires belt, tensioner and it was running like absolute dog doo doo and I knew there had to be a engine light but it wasn’t illuminated. So I found there was codes but no light so that means this half ass dealer either pulled the bulb or unplugged it or it’s burnt out. I would assume the bulb is fine being all the other lights including the gauge bulbs are fine which are illuminated more often then anything. I paid cash for the truck $7,600.00 with a joke of a drive train warranty. So I have got over $10,000.00 invested in this thing which is fine if this misfire is an easy fix because the truck is a nice truck, but I bought it to use it for work and $10,000.00 later I’m still using my 2015 Explorer which is not ideal for my business, lol.

This does not sound too good. It’s coming from passenger side of the engine. Any idea what it could be? Lifters, valves, springs?

Hi,

The sound in the second video sounds like an exhaust manifold leak. Does the warranty cover it? Also, I understand your frustration going up the hill. Wow.

When you went up the hill, I really couldn't hear what the engine was doing. Here is what I want you to try. Remove the oxygen sensor before the catalytic converter. If the converter is plugged, you should notice a difference simply because you are adding a small area for the exhaust to exit. Here is a link that explains how to test one, but it suggests removing the entire converter:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-test-a-catalytic-converter

I attached a pic of the exhaust system and circled the two sensors I'm referring to.

Let me know if it makes any difference. Also, since you purchased a warranty, has a dealer checked it out for you?

Joe

I got it towed this morning to the local shop in town and we will see tomorrow what they find out. But I don’t think the sound was a mani leak I did have one on driver side that I fixed but that was sounding more like internal. I put my ear to each valve cover and it’s was pretty loud there but if it’s internal it’s covered I’m also looking into upgrading the coverage as well cause I could have had all the stuff. I just replaced done for $100.00 deductible if I thought about this sooner lol I’m pretty confident this shop is gonna do me right. The last time I saw a shop this nice was the pompano beach Florida Porsche dealership I could not believe their shop there. So I’m going to be anxiously waiting for that phone call with what they found out in the morning and I will be sure to update you! I appreciate you taking the time to respond man.

Hi,

If you have a chance, let me know what they find. I'm interested in knowing.
