From a cold start, engine misses for about two minutes, then smooths out. No check engine light is on. I'm looking for the coolant temperature sensor on this engine, but cannot find it.

Hi,

On this vehicle, there is a cylinder head temperature sensor. It is located on the driver's side front cylinder head below the intake. I attached a pic of its location. The directions indicate to remove the upper intake manifold to replace it, but if you remove the alternator, chances are you can get to it.

Now, before you go crazy replacing it, do you have a live data scanner? If the sensor is causing the misfire when cold and there are no codes, you can check to see what the sensor is indicating the temp to be (maybe too hot or too cold). Or, you can tell by the fuel trims if they are too rich or lean.

It's just a thought. May save you a few bucks and a headache. Keep in mind, if it hasn't had new plugs, they may be a possible cause as well.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,
Joe

The sensor location you told me about, is not there. I have looked on both heads, and only see a spot on the left head were I thought it was but its not on either head. Now, when I tried to start it today, it only turned over for a split second and stopped, like something is binding the engine up. I am at my wits end with this, I've been trying to get this fixed for a week now. Is there anything else that would make it act this way? Thank you for the advise, but I can't seem to find this sensor to save my rear.

Hi,
:
Just to confirm, it is an 03 with the 5.4L. That is what my manual is telling me as far as location. Are you sure it isn't broken off? I've seen that as well.

As far as the starting, when it cuts out, does the start just quit or can you hear it trying to turn?

Yes, this is a 03, 5.4 Triton engine. No I can't see anything just hanging around in there and no dangling wires either. Like I said earlier I can see a hole underneath the manifold on the passengers side head where I thought it would be. But only that hole. Nothing else, as far as wires or anything else. Now for the issue of not starting, It only will crank over for a split second then stop.I can hold the the key to the start position, but it only cranks over for maybe one second, then stops. Is there another sensor or item that will prevent the engine from turning over? Thank you!

Hi,

Try this. In the under hood fuel box, locate the starter relay. Switch it with a different relay in the box that has the same part number and see if that changes it.

I attached a pic of the relay location.

Let me know.
