Engine knocking noise

My car starting making like a knocking noise. I pulled over and found out I was out of oil..I assumed my engine is gone ( I know nothing about cars). Is my car junked now? I was told I just need to change my head gasket and a few other things and should be fine. Is this true? I am trying to learn more and get more information before sinking money into it.

Hello,

Yes, if the engine ran out of oil I would not try to repair it. I would replace it with a good used engine. Sorry about that. :(
