My son just noticed the emissions malfunction indicator lamp is showing on his dash. The car only has 1/4 of tank worth of gas in it, but when we go to pump gas, it acts like it's full and gas spills out. Otherwise, the car is running perfect and there is no problems with acceleration or idle.

Hello,

It sounds like the vehicle has an issue with EVAP canister being clogged or a faulty vent valve for the EVAP system.

If there is a clog in the fuel tank evaporation system or the valve is stuck then the gases wont be able to escape the tank and will create a bottle neck affect on the fuel filler tube. This will cause the fuel to spill out or have the pump shut off over and over.

Have you scanned the vehicle for the trouble codes? This can help diagnosing the issue.
You can take the vehicle to any of your local auto parts store and they can scan it and let you know the codes. And let me know what those codes are.

Please let me know of any questions.
Thank you
