Can an electronic limited slip rear end be replaced with a non electronic limited slip rear end without messing up the computer?

Nope, you must have the same type or there will be a non stop trouble code in the car. Here are instructions in the diagrams below on how to change out the rear differential. Check out the diagrams (below). Let us know what happens and please upload pictures or videos of the problem.

It will not mess the computer up but you will have a check engine light on. You will not have the solenoid to plug in so you will have an open circuit.

Is there a reason that you don't want to replace this with the same rear that comes in it?

I attached the info below on how this works and that may better explain what could happen.

Let us know and we can go from there. Thanks

The rear ends that I have found are a lot more expensive with the E LSD. That was the only reason I was asking.

It is four wheel drive only. If I remove all the gears in the front differential and disconnect the drive shaft will I be able to drive it until I can get a new front differential?

Hi Markan56,

If you need to disconnect the front differential then you just need to remove the front drive shaft. As long as the front differential can spin it does not need to be disassembled. However, if it is making noise or has come apart catastrophically, then yes, removing the ring and pinion gear sets will be required. Also, keep in mind if the carrier and bearings are going to be removed, you may need to remove the axle shafts as well because they are supported on the inside of the differential by those bearings. Also, if you remove the pinion gear then the oil is going to leak out so if you are going to run it with no drive shaft and the front differential is no functional, I would try to leave everything except for just the ring gear. Remove this from the carrier and then reinstall the carrier and it should spin and not touch the pinion and the axles will be supported, and the pinion and seal will keep oil in and water/dirt out.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks

You are welcome. Yeah, I would remove the carrier, take the ring off and clean the metal out of the housing. Then just put the carrier with no ring back in and add about a quart of fluid just to be safe and keep some oil in there to fit off rust. Then you should be able to just remove the front prop shaft and drive it until the parts arrive.

Let us know if you need anything else. Thanks for using 2CarPros.

If you are refering to the rear axle and differential, jack the car up and secure it by the frame. Next, you will need to remove the drive shaft, all brake lines, any wiring. From the axle. Finally, remove the U-bolts that hold the axle to the leaf springs. NOTE: Suppot the axle assembly when removing the U-bolts. It will drop when the bolts are removed.

Let me know if you have other questions.

Joe
