Does engine need overhaul

My vehicle always emitted cloud of white smoke when started up. Then it disappeared as soon as I started driving. It was stolen and recovered within an hour. The criminals drove twenty km with it. It was (supposed to be)assessed and locks and steering wheel were fixed. But when I received it back from the dealers, it now emits cloud of smoke when I pull away at the robot and while I am driving sometimes more, sometimes less, which it had not done before. Could it be that my engine could have been damaged in the short time the thieves had it?

Good afternoon.

Yes, they could have damaged it by over-revving the engine or too much engine speed.

It sounds like something is not correct in the cylinders whether it is oil or coolant that is burning.

Tests will have to be done to determine the failure but with the mileage, I doubt you would want to just repair the issue without doing an overhaul.

Thank you for your reply. The people who checked it for the insurer said it was because of wear and tear that the engine emits smoke and that the thieves could not have damaged it. I told my insurer about the smoke that has not been there before, but they believe the assessor (paid by them of course) who checked my car. Is there any way in which I can prove that my car was damaged? Should I take my car to an independent assessor such as the AA? Or perhaps Toyota?

You would need proof that it was not smoking prior to the theft. You may need to provide receipts for maintenance to prove you took care of the care and there were no issues prior to the theft.

Yes, an independent would help but you still need to prove it did not smoke prior to the theft.
