My tachometer jumps from 1500 to 2000 and back at speeds of 45 to 55, I can hear the motor surge, the speed is steady. This truck is a 2001 1500 Dodge Ram magnum V8 with a 318 engine, it also goes into passing gear when just trying to accelerate normally. Could it be something besides transmission going bad?

Couple things you can do.

-Check for any codes stored in the computer.

-Disconnect the alternater and drive it, may be electrical interference from a bad alternater. If problem is gone, replace the alternater. Obviously drive it only enough to confirm.

-TPS may be bad, failry common on these.

-Check to see if the latest pcm software update is in there and what fixes will occur if there is a new version.

-Make sure the fluid is good and the filter changed as it should have been. Must use atf+4
