Hello, I have a 2001 Dodge RAM 1500 5.9L. The otherday the check engine light came on, truck continued to run fine. Took it to a trusted mechanic, he plugged it in to a computer and the computer said "#2 cylinder misfire" he reset the sys. We changed Distrib, rotor, wires, & plugs. Drove it around for while, all seemed good. About 50 miles later, light came back on, I haven't made it back to my mechanic friend yet, any advice you could send my way!

A misfire in a specific cylinder should lead you to check the spark plug, fuel injector and compression. Misfiring can be caused by worn or fouled spark plugs, a weak spark (weak coil, bad spark plug wire), loss of compression, vacuum leaks, anything that causes an unusually lean fuel mixture (lean misfire), an EGR valve that is stuck open, dirty fuel injectors, low fuel pressure, or even bad fuel.

The plugs looked good when we pulled them, no abnormalities. What boggles us is that the truck starts, runs, accelorates and shuts down just fine. If a cylinder was misfiring. Wouldn't we hear it or feel it?

A misfire at cyl no.2 P0302 will prompt you to check the sparkplug/compression/ injector for no.2 cyl

You can feel the miss and be throwing the P0302

A few of the forums I've read say that it could just be a loose gas cap. Is that possible?

The gas cap relates to a problem with evaporative control system I don't think so-you're dealing with a misfire on one cylinder

Depends if its a valve or ring/cylinder problem you are looking at a rebuild engine
