1996 Dodge Stratus 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive 132000 miles

when fueling the vehicle I have to put the gas in real slow because if I don't it spills out even if the car is out of gas, why is that? I had a mechanic look at it and he said that it might be some type of canister in the hood because he said around the gas tank everything is fine. Thanks for your help.

There is a breather hose that runs from the fuel tank along side of the filler tube. When fuel enters the trank, air must exit through that tube. It is made of a hard plastic and sometimes they get damaged. Check that and let me know what you find. If it is kinked or damaged, the air can't leave the fuel tank and this the fuel can't enter.
