Transmission problem
1996 Dodge Stratus

I am looking at this car to buy for only 500 dollars. The owner says it needs work on the transmission. The problem is it wont go over 35mph. Its a automatic and it shifts and reverse works in it. Does this sound like transmission problems to you? If so what kind of price range is sensible to fix?

If you are to repair yourself, it should be less than $500. Things to check for:
1. Input and output speed sensors (about $50). If that doesn't work,
2. Transmission control module (wrecking yard $100, dealer $350). Make sure that you get one for the same year, and the identical marking on both units. Very seldom, both has happened,
3. Solenoid pack. (Wrecking yard $75, dealer $175).

Keep in mind, prices vary by locations.
