Knocking noises

My friend has a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 extended cab pickup; not sure of the mileage, I guess about 117,000. Hes noticed a knocking noise after the truck warms up. Its irregular, not constant. I listened to it with a stethoscope, and it is coming from the oil pan. Im figuring its either a loose nut on a connecting rod thats making it chatter, or where the rod connects to the bottom of the piston is going bad. Hes looking it up in some books, but we would like a second opinion from anyone who might know what this is. Any tips would be appreciated.

Sounds like a bad pushrod to me, I would take the valve cover off and check and see if any of the valve springs are loose. Also start the truck with the cover off and see if any of the valves over filll themselves with oil, dont let truck run for too long tho! Maybe 5 or 6 seconds should be enough time
