I just purchased a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 (gas) 5.9L 4x4 truck. It has 170,000 miles on it. It runs great but the owner who sold it to me did not know if and when the timing chain had ever been replaced. He was at least the second owner.

Should I just get the timing chain replaced or is this chain expected to last beyond this type of mileage? Sorry but I am not mechanical and I have received a wide range of answers from friends and "experts" locally.

Timing chain issues are pretty rare for those engines, dont get me wrong, by that mileage it is pretty stretched out and could probably stand to be replaced. If you are willingt o have someone go in there and replace it, then it will do nothing but help the engine potentially last longer
