I have a whinning in the rearend on my 99 dodge 1500. I have replaced the axle bearrings with no change. I did not want to replace the differential bearing but it seems that is the problem. The question is if the wear pattern and backlash are good to start can I take the differential out whole, press on the bearings, and install withh minor backlask adjustment. Or am I getting in over my head. A shop said they woud do it for 600.00.

Unless you do these on a somewhat regular basis, you may be spinning your wheels. Errr gears I should say. The chance of frustration, and having to re-do with more damage may not be the way to go. We won't do these in-house.

$600 is a fair price and suggest going down that path.
