Engine Mechanical problem
1996 Dodge Ram V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

after running hard(pulling trailer or empty at 70 mph for around fifteen minutes it picks up a lifter rattle and oil smoke starts rolling.I shut it off for around 15 min and start it back up and clatter quits and blue(oil) smoke billows out until it clears itself out. Carries 40 lb oil pressure third plug back on right side lays out when clatter occurs. If it's a lifter collapsing why why does it come back after "resting"? This is getting progressivly worse.I've tried all kinds of additives and brands and weights of oil. I have to believe this has happened to others.

Have you ever had the valve covers off to make sure the returns are not plugged?

That would be my next try, I wanted to get other opiniions in case that didn't work out. This truck runs great with no oil consumption. The only problem I have is this one and I really think there's any easy fix. If that's the only easy option left and it doesn't work I guess the next step is an engine replacement.
I, m 65 and have worked on engines most of my life and it just makes no sense that it's just one valve sticking and that it comes and goes. Guess I'll try the valve cover if that's all you can think of.I'll keep you informed

I agree with you. It is odd. The idea of the returns not allowing oil to return could be the problem unless you just have one lifter going bad.

Let me know.
