1996 Dodge Ram Idle problems

When I start the pickup it starts fine and idles. I drive down the road and go to stop and it dies, as long as I keep my foot on the gas it will stay running. Sometimes I smell gas. When running down the road it seems to run fine. Please help me.

Hi:
If the only time this happens is when you idle, my first guess would be the idle air control (IAC) or the throttle position sensor (TPS). Keep in mind, this is a guess until you have the computer scanned. Have it done at a nationally recognized parts store. Most likely they will do it for free. Also, check for vacuum leaks.
