Traveling at 75 mph on the freeway, all of a sudden transmission makes a bang type noise and will not engage into gear. Reverse or drive. My father in law seems to think he can repair this but the question is what could cause this and is the transmission easy to drop out of the car for repair or replace? He seems to think since it is front wheel drive you may have to "raise" the engine.

You will need an engine lift and remove the engine and transmission as an assembly to have it worked on. Did transmission oil leak out all over the ground? Most likely the turbine inside the torque converter exploded; however, you will need to look extensively into the transmission for other signs of failure.

No there was no fluid leaking. Is this expensive if done by a dealership or other transmisson shop?

If it is anything other than the torque converter the transmission is most likely destroyed. Drain the fluid and check for metal shavings or shrapnel, also note the color of the fluid. A dodge dealership will more than likely charge in excess of $2,000; however, a transmission specialist may stay under $1500. It all depends on if the transmission is salvagable.
