1995 Dodge Neon speedometer

My speedometer and odometer stopped working.
i was told by some one that its the speed sensor.
i know where it is located and the transmission but what should I look for if it is defective and do you have any other ideas that could be cause this problem

I think u shuld have the BCM check
but the out put and input sensors are located at the tranny
