Code P0456

2001 dodge intrepid se w/53260mi. I changed the gas cap two months ago and I'm still getting this code. I checked the lines from the purge solenoid and under the car leading to fuel tank and haven't noticed any leaks. What is the procedure to test the purge solenoid under the hood? Do I do a vacuum test or do I test the solenoid for voltage or resistance? Thanks for any help.

Smoke the system for leaks. The only other way is to force the computer to run it's evap diagnostics, and that equipment is not readily available to the public.

I went to to the dealer and picked up an oem gas cap two days ago. I changed the cap, cleared the code and so far light has not come on. Also, I noticed a strong smell of gas on the aftermarket cap so maybe they gave me the wrong cap or it wasn't sealing properly.
