2002 Dodge Intrepid

My car downshifts hard only. It shifts fine going up but when I come to a stop downshifting is hard and when im in like 4th gear and I put my foot into it and it shifts from 4th to 3rd its really a hard shift? What could cause this?

It sounds as if you have a sticking valve/check ball in your transmission's valve body. But of course there's no way for me to be sure.

First check your fluid for the proper level. And smell it for a "burnt" smell. And if it's any color other than redish-pink, replace it along with a filter change.

If this doesn't work, take it to a competent transmission shop.

It is a tough call to spend so much money having the fluid/filter changed if your tranny is going to need replacement anyway. But if your fluid is burnt/contaminated, then it may remedy your issue, and keep you from paying a thousand bucks replacing your tranny.
