The car vibrates or shakes a lot when I brake to stop.

Very high probablility of warped brake rorors. Typically the front rotors will be the ones to make the steering wheels shake.

You'll need pads and the calipers serviced at the same time. IF you have rear drum brkaes, they should get cleaned and adusted at the same time ti help the brakes stop evenly.
