1999 Dodge Intrepid wont turn over or start everytime

I am having a strange issue with our family car. When the key is turned sometimes it just makes a single click. I am able to continue to turn the key over and over and eventually the starter will engage and the car starts easily. It is a different experiece everytime. Sometime it starts first try, sometimes after 4-5 tries and sometimes after 30 tries. So far it has always started, but extremelly frustrating and potentially hazardous for my family.
