Do I need to reprogram a used BCM to replace my current defective one?

How?

I never heard of any 98 BCM being re-programmed but it may be possible. The TCM was the only one you could flash at the time. You really should be sure of the part numbers but if you get one with the same connectors and same model features it may just be ok.
