1979 Dodge Diplomat DERBY CAR Problems

Im in the middle of getting a derby car ready the car runs fine in park or N but the second I put it in any gear it dies I have removed all of the dashborad wireing. Is it something that can be jimmy riged to make it run better or do I need a new part. ITS A DEMOLITION DERBY car its gonna get wrecked.

When you put it in gear, does it feel as if you popped the clutch on a standard. Like the trans and engine isn't disengaged?
