When I start my car in cranking position it starts with the starter in cranking positon. When I have it the regular on postion it stalls. Lateley the car seems to stall when I get low on fuel. But I was able to keep it running now it will only run if I keep the starter in cranking position

I think what you are saying when you put itin the starting postion it starts then quits when it goes to the on position. If this is the case you ballast resistor is probaly shot. It's the white block on your firewall. They are cheap and easy to replace.
