2004 Dodge Dakota Cold Start Idle Problems

Normally when I start my truck cold, the engine runs at a higher RPM and then after it warms up the rpms drop and it idles. Recently when I start it cold, the rpms climb up for a few seconds, but then it drops down again. It will do this up and down for a about half a minute and then it just drops to a normal idle. Any idea what might cause this?

The idle speed is PCM controlled using a small motor and timing changes, if the throttle blade is stationary, the idle speed motor or throttle position sensor could be either bad or being told to move by the PCM by another input. A scanner would help identify this. See the section about how to use diagnostic tools. Very good. Ok
