The starter is on the driver's side and mounts where the trans and engine bolt together. When it doesn't start, does the starter not engage?

the makes a click sound. sometimes it starts and sometimes it doesnt.

A clicking sound usully indicates a weak battery or a bad connection. Have you checked battery terminals to see if they are clean and tight? Have you had the battery load tested?
